What does the Innovation Core do?

Mount Sinai’s Innovation Core is designed to fill the gap in the training and expertise needed to move a discovery from the research setting into a viable product or service that can help patients, or to recognize the potential for translation and / or commercialization.

i3 Prism

i3 Prism is an early-stage technology commercialization fund that fosters innovators and innovations to support the provision of healthcare and help bring new solutions to patients and society while advancing technologies to the next level from a commercial perspective. The awardees receive funding to help advance their innovations, develop commercialization plans, and bring their inventions closer to the healthcare marketplace and the people that need them. The 2024 i3 Prism winners include: Megan Christy, Drs. Magdalena Zak, and Lakshmi Shree Kulumani Mahadevan. Dr. Christy is developing CerviFlex, a novel brachytherapy applicator for cervical cancer. Dr. Zak is developing a cancer-specific modRNA translation system for targeted therapeutic mRNA expression in tumors. Dr. Kulumani Mahadevan is developing GlioMark, a digital biomarker for diagnostic and therapeutic response prediction in gliomas.

Elementa Labs

Elementa Labs is a virtual incubator program powered by MSIP that helps position healthcare and biotechnology startup companies for the next stage in their development. The program allows these entities to explore ways to strategically align their efforts with Mount Sinai and gain access to subject matter expertise in healthcare and science, allowing for a better understanding of their customers and the potential advancement of their core technology platforms.

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp

The MSIP Entrepreneurship Bootcamp educates participants in the fundamentals of health care technology commercialization at Mount Sinai. The 12-week program is open to all members of the Mount Sinai community who are interested in learning how to develop a healthcare solution and build a commercial path that aims to impact the patient population. Participants who fully complete the Bootcamp (including modules and assignments) will pre-qualify for the subsequent Tech Launchpad.

Innovation Sprint

The MSIP Innovation Sprint is an abridged version of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp to rapidly bring participants up to speed on the fundamentals of commercialization and entrepreneurship. Sprint participants already have a health care solution they are developing that is beyond the concept stage.

Tech Launchpad

Upon successful completion of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp or the Innovation Sprint, participants will apply the knowledge gained to help further develop their technologies and position their solutions to gain traction through partnerships, investment, or other commercial paths.

Mount Sinai Pitch Challenge

The Mount Sinai Pitch Challenge is the Entrepreneurship Program’s capstone event, where finalists compete for a cash prize and / or pro-bono services to continue the development of a health care solution. Teams will be judged by members of the venture capital community and seasoned entrepreneurs or operators.

The 2023-2024 Pitch Challenge cycle was the first time MSIP and the Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine (CEPM) worked together to create a dedicated CEPM track for the Pitch Challenge. CEPM teams were comprised of at least one member from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Icahn Mount Sinai) and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

The 2024 Pitch Challenge winners include: award to this year’s winners: Drs. Mustafa Siddiq, Andy Chan, and Lara Marcuse. Dr. Siddiq is developing a component for sustained delivery of Poly(pro-boldine), to the central nervous system for spinal cord injury recovery. Dr. Chan is developing a non-invasive, in-ear device using EEG technology for seizure detection and monitoring, known as SEIZEAR. Dr. Marcuse is developing a wearable EEG device, known as Seizurescope, for accurate prediction of epileptic seizures.

MSIP Fellows Program

The MSIP Fellows Program is designed to educate and engage early-career scientists, attorneys, and/or business professionals who have strong interests in the commercialization process of new therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices or digital health technologies to the worldwide patient population. If successfully completed, the fellow will be prepared to leverage their expertise in science, business and law to help drive research discoveries to the marketplace. The two-phase scheme will train participants in the various aspects of technology commercialization.

Mount Sinai Ideas Network

The Mount Sinai Ideas Network is a virtual experience that features Mount Sinai’s wide range of healthcare technologies and innovative products that aim to benefit patient lives. Through collaborating with various departments and teams, the Ideas Network was developed to serve as a gateway to the Health System’s innovation ecosystem for new and existing students, faculty, commercialization partners, donors, and more.
