Dr. Yun-Soung Kim, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His research centers on bridging engineered materials with human physiology to enable clinically credible, scalable measurement in real-world settings. During his undergraduate and graduate training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he co-developed early classes of skin-wearable electronics, gaining deep experience in stretchable materials, microfabrication, and biointerface design for high-fidelity sensing. During his PhD at the University of California, San Diego, he advanced scalable manufacturing approaches that moved wearable systems beyond one-off prototypes toward reproducible production, while also integrating wireless electronics and system-level architectures for reliable physiologic data capture. As a postdoctoral fellow and research faculty at Georgia Tech, he helped establish a framework for soft, elastomer-sealed, wireless wearable platforms designed for gentle, stable skin attachment and longitudinal monitoring in real-world and clinical settings.
For Dr. Kim’s proposal, A Wearable and Nearable Implementation Framework for Measuring the Geriatric Sleep Exposome, he will be working with Dr. Hsiao-Hsien Leon Hsu, ScD; Dr. Mariana Figueiro, PhD; and Dr. William Hung, MD, MPH.
Dr. Kim’s team seeks to address the absence of a stakeholder-informed implementation and measurement framework for deploying multimodal wearable and nearable technologies in older adults’ sleep environments.
His proposal aims to:
- Define stakeholder-informed implementation requirements for wearable and nearable sleep-exposome monitoring in geriatric settings.
- Pilot a 7-night home deployment of an integrated wearable/nearable sleep-exposome kit in older adults.
