
Dr. Benjamin Kummer, MD, and his team, SeizAI, are using artificial intelligence to analyze smartphone videos of seizure-like episodes and distinguish epileptic seizures from functional dissociative seizures. Built on a validated machine learning model, the platform is being translated into a mobile application that enables users to securely capture or upload event videos and receive an AI-generated classification as a diagnostic decision-support tool.
The technology addresses a significant unmet clinical need, as patients with seizure disorders often experience prolonged diagnostic delays, misdiagnosis, and reliance on costly, resource-intensive video EEG monitoring at specialized epilepsy centers. By providing an accessible, video-based screening and triage solution, the platform has the potential to expedite referral to appropriate care, reduce unnecessary testing, and improve diagnostic efficiency.
Beyond its initial use case, the platform could support telehealth workflows, expand access to epilepsy specialists in underserved communities, and serve as the foundation for future AI-enabled remote neurological assessment tools.
