Mandatory Training for In Vivo Research

Affiliating an Existing CITI Account with ISMMS

To affiliate your existing CITI account with ISMMS follow the steps below:

  • Log in to CITI Program.
  • Select “Click here to affiliate with another institution”, and select “Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai”.
  • Enter your work email account, your name as recognized by HR and your life number (or its equivalent) in the CITI profile page.
  •  Add the course(s) you need to complete and click “Submit”.

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Training

Required For

All researchers working with vertebrate animals and who are listed on the IACUC protocol must attend a wet lab and lecture on animal care use and IACUC policies.

For all researchers who plan to house animals in, perform experiments within or require access to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai animal vivaria, the following is required:

  • Lab animal wet lab training
  • Lecture training
  • Center for Comparative Medicine and Surgery (CCMS) vivaria walk-thru

What

CITI Program Training Modules

  1. Rigor, Reproducibility, and Ethical Behavior in Biomedical Research (Required for Principle Investigators)
  2. Species Specific Module (Required for Principal Investigators and their research personnel)

*Failure to complete training will result in delay of review of the protocol.

Note: Individuals who intend to handle biohazardous materials are required to complete the CITI Program Training – Biomedical Research, including elective training on safe handling of sharps, and Supplemental, Activity Specific Training, as applicable to your studies. If your work involves blood, organs, or other tissues from experimental animals infected with HIV, HBV, or HCV, then you must complete the CITI Program Training-OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens.

When

Faculty, fellows, residents and students must show completion when submitting an IACUC protocol.

  • Set up your account
    • Click here for step by step CITI registration instructions.
    • To set up your account, follow the instructions below:
      • Click “Register” on the CITI Home Page
      • Select “Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (SSO)” as your Organization Affiliation
      • Select “Continue” to SSO Login/Instructions
      • Use your Mount Sinai email address, your name recognized by HR, and your Life Number (or its equivalent) to your profile. This is essential to ensure that your record of completion electronically populates into your eDSM profile.
  • Register for required ISMMS training modules
    • Log in to CITI Program
    • Click the link “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups” for ISMMS
    • Add the course(s) you need to complete and click “Submit”.

Annual Occupational Health and Safety Questionnaire (OHSQ)

Required For

All personnel directly or indirectly exposed to laboratory animals.

When

Required annually.

Access

The PI or Laboratory Supervisor must initiate the Occupational Health and Safety Questionnaire (OHSQ) form in Sinai Central. Once the PI or Supervisor has completed Part A of the OHSQ form, the staff member receives an automated email containing a link to the confidential Part B of the form.

Instructions for Completing Part A of the OHSQ - For PIs and Supervisors

  • Log into Sinai Central
  • Click “Employee Self Service”
  • Select “Occupational Health Survey”
  • Refer to "Sinai Knowledge OHSQ" for instructions on completing Part A of the OHSQ.

Instructions for Completing Part B of the OHSQ - For Staff Members

  • Either click the link in the email and log into Sinai Central when prompted, or open Sinai Central and log in directly.
  • Click “Employee Self Service”
  • Click "Occupational Health Survey
  • Refer to "Sinai Knowledge OHSQ" for instructions on completing Part B of the OHSQ.

Renewal

An email notification to renew Part B of the OHSQ along with a Renew link will be sent to staff members every 10 months. Renewal notifications will continue as long as the staff member remains attached to a protocol.
