CITI Training: Course Requirements and Site Navigation

CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) training for safe and ethical project conduct is required for all nurse-led evidence based practice (EBP), quality improvement (QI), and research projects in the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS). CITI is a cross-institutional training platform used by MSHS and many other health systems and universities to provide education on topics related to the ethical conduct of research and use of data. This guide provides detailed information about which CITI trainings are required for nurse-led EBP, QI, and research projects at MSHS project and instructions for how to access and complete the trainings.

Who Must Complete CITI Training?

All project team members are required to complete CITI training.

Which CITI Courses Are Required?

Project team members for all nurse-led EBP, QI, and research projects are required to take the following course before submitting their project for review by the Nursing Project Approval Council (NPAC):

  • Rigor, Reproducibility and Ethical Behavior in Bio-medical Research

If NPAC refers your project for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review, all project team members will need to take the following additional courses:

  • Basic course: Human Research Protection Education
  • Data Security and HIPAA training
  • HIPAA Research Update
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

When

Training must be completed prior to NPAC and IRB submission.

What Proof of Completion Is Required?

CITI will generate a certificate for each course after you complete it. Please save the certificate for Rigor, Reproducibility and Ethical Behavior in Bio-medical Research and upload it to the NPAC submission form in REDCap© where indicated. Your certificate(s) will be saved on your CITI account if you ever need them in the future.

How Are CITI Trainings Accessed?

Step-by-step instructions for accessing CITI trainings are provided below.

  • Set up your account
    • Click here for step by step CITI registration instructions.
    • To set up your account, follow the instructions below:
      • Click “Register” on the CITI Home Page
      • Select “Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (SSO)” as your Organization Affiliation
      • Select “Continue” to SSO Login/Instructions
      • Use your Mount Sinai email address, your name recognized by HR, and your Life Number (or it’s equivalent) to your profile. This is essential to ensure that your record of completion electronically populates into your eDMS profile.
  • Register for required ISMMS training modules
    • Log in to CITI Program
    • Click the link “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups” for ISMMS
    • Add the course(s) you need to complete and click “Submit”.
      • Human Subjects Research (Basic or Refresher) – Note: Basic Course must be taken before the Refresher even if you took the Basic course at your previous institution.
      • Data Security and HIPAA Training
      • HIPAA Update
      • Rigor, Reproducibility and Ethical Behavior in Bio-medical Research (this is the only course required if you’re submitting a QI or EBP project to NPAC only)

Affiliating Your Existing CITI Account with ISMMS

To affiliate your existing CITI account with ISMMS follow the steps below:

  • Log in to CITI Program.
  • Select “Click here to affiliate with another institution”, and select “Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai”.
  • Enter your work email account, your name as recognized by HR and your life number (or its equivalent) in the CITI profile page. This is essential to ensure your training certifications automatically populate into your eDMS profile
  • Add the course(s) you need to complete and click “Submit”.
    • Human Subjects Research (Basic or Refresher)
    • Data Security and HIPAA Training
    • HIPAA Update
    • Rigor, Reproducibility and Ethical Behavior in Bio-medical Research (this is the only course required if you’re submitting a QI or EBP project to NPAC only)
