American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Funding Opportunities

Distinguished Investigator Innovation Grants

Projects will contribute to the understanding/prevention of suicide or treatment of suicidal individual. Projects CANNOT be prevention/educational programs, treatments or interventions that do not have significant research component.

Amount/Duration: $125,000 over 2 years

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Be from a USA based 501c3 orgs. For-profit and government not eligible.
  • Be an associate professor or higher
  • Have an established record or research/publication on suicide
  • Be a PI on only one AFSP grant at a time. PIs for an ASFP grant CAN be a mentor on a separate AFSP grant

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Innovation Grants

Project awards for Young investigators who are studying suicide research and taking part in training for basic or clinical research.

Amount/Duration: Salary of $48,000/year + Allowance of $8,000/year

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Have completed PhD, MD or doctoral degree within past 6 years
  • Have had less than 3 years of fellowship support
  • PI can be from a USA or foreign based organization
  • Commit full-time to funded project

Standard Research Innovation Grants

Projects will contribute to the understanding/prevention of suicide or treatment of suicidal individual and should fund new initiatives, not existing research or junior investigators. Projects CANNOT be prevention/educational programs, treatments or interventions that do not have significant research component.

Amount/Duration: Up to $100,000 over 2 years

Eligibility: 

  • PI can be at any professional level
  • Prior research experience in suicide not required, but must demonstrate research in related field.
  • Be from a USA based 501c3 orgs. For-profit and government not eligible.
  • Be a PI on only one AFSP grant at a time. PIs for an ASFP grant CAN be a mentor on a separate AFSP grant

Amount/Duration: Up to $90,000 over 2 years

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Be at or below assistant professor level
  • Be from a USA based 501c3 orgs. For-profit and government not eligible.
  • Be a PI on only one AFSP grant at a time. PIs for an ASFP grant CAN be a mentor on a separate AFSP grant
  • Not have any NIMH/Federal R01/equivalent funding. K awards allowed
  • Applicants may not receive more than 2 YI Grants over their careers
  • Have mentor at associate or full processor level
